Due to Irma, Septmeber 11th 2001 will be overshadowed today. This is due to safety which I completely support. However, as a firefighter this day will always be a somber one. As I watched the events unfold on TV, I selfishly worried about my family, making sure that all of my traveling family members were not on those flights.
343 selfless heroes died that day and the number of heroes that have died from their roles in the rescue efforts climb. They had to have known that they were not going to go home to their families after that shift. However, they continued up the stairs attempting to save every life they could.
That day has a lot to do with my decision to be a firefighter. I hope that once you're in the clear today after Irma, that you will remember the heroes that paid the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow man.
